I’ve been brushing up on map and compass skills for trips where GPS might fail. Using landmarks, sun position and contour lines keeps you on track and sharp. One trip I even navigated through thick timber without a device and it really felt like a survival movie. How do you stay confident finding your way when tech’s out?

Compass and a good sense of pace count more than any GPS. Just trust your terrain reading, keep orienting often and never let pride stop you from checking that map twice.

I still carry a compass and topo map too. GPS is great till batteries die and there’s something cool about trusting your bearings and reading the land like folks used to.

I once bailed myself out of a canyon using just a map since I forgot to charge my phone, I felt like a total pro!

Good points, @Brad, but here's something to think about...don't you think a lot of hunters these days would get lost in a cornfield without a GPS to tell them which way is north?

That's why you gotta have a backup plan. If your GPS dies or the batteries die, you're stuck with nothing. A map and compass will always work.
